Amica names Edmund (Ted) Shallcross III Chair of the Board

Since assuming the role of president and chief executive officer in October 2022, Shallcross has propelled Amica to new heights. He has established a clear executive vision for the 119-year-old mutual insurer that prioritizes world-class products and customer experience, technology-driven operational excellence, and a thriving workplace culture. The strong future-ready focus is balanced by an adherence to Amica’s long-standing values and dedication to the community.

Under Shallcross’s leadership, Amica has fortified its financial position through disciplined underwriting, exceptional service delivery and a focus on operational efficiency. In 2025, Amica strengthened their balance sheet, including reaching the second-highest surplus level in company history, an important measure of the company’s ability to be there for its policyholders.

The company has continued to earn national recognition for customer satisfaction, workplace excellence and financial strength — including its most recent JD Power honor as the #1 Insurance Company in the U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study (its 67th overall award from JD Power), continued recognition on Forbes’ America’s Best Insurance Companies list, and AM Best’s Superior financial strength rating. Amica has also been recognized as a Platinum winner in the inaugural Where You Work Matters list, as well as on Newsweek’s Greatest Workplaces lists for both Diversity and Women. Strategic partnerships have further amplified Amica’s national footprint and reinforced its community impact. Notably, collaborations with the Boston Celtics, Jayson Tatum and Penn State have increased brand awareness in ways that align with Amica’s service-led culture, reflecting the company’s ongoing dedication to the communities it serves.

“Ted’s leadership demonstrates a clear and thoughtful vision for Amica’s future,” noted Jill Avery, lead director of the board. “He is dedicated to maintaining the traditions that have made Amica successful for over a century, while also showing the courage and foresight to embrace changes that will guide us into the next century. This makes him an excellent choice to serve as chair.”

Shallcross holds a master’s degree in strategic management from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business as well as a bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross. He has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration from Bryant University, reflecting career and community achievement.

Shallcross is active in both industry-related organizations and the community. He serves on the board of directors of the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA), The CEO Partnership for Rhode Island, the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, and the American Cancer Society’s New England Chapter of CEOs Against Cancer.

“As chair, I look forward to working closely with our very talented board and leadership team to ensure Amica remains focused on what matters most — our people, our policyholders and the long-term strength of our mutual company,” Shallcross said.
