Fundraising Efforts for Spay and Neuter Services in Montgomery County
The Woodlands, United States – March 4, 2026 / Lone Star Animal Welfare League /
Lone Star Animal Welfare League (LSAWL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving Montgomery County since 2004, is reaching out to the community for support of its low-cost spay and neuter initiative. This program plays a crucial role in preventing unwanted litters, decreasing shelter intake, and enhancing animal health throughout the region, addressing these issues before animals enter the rescue system.
Throughout the last twenty years, LSAWL has successfully sterilized around 12,000 dogs and cats. The organization currently offers subsidized services through reliable veterinary partners, ensuring essential care is accessible to pet owners who might otherwise struggle to afford such services.
Spaying and neutering are widely acknowledged as the most efficient methods for reducing stray populations and preventing animals from filling overcrowded shelters. Unlike emergency rescues that focus on individual cases, prevention works to eliminate suffering before it starts.
“Spaying and neutering stops litters of puppies from being born only to be abandoned on the streets or taken to overcrowded shelters,” stated Laura McConnell, the founder of Lone Star Animal Welfare League. “While it may not be as visible as an emergency rescue, its long-term impact is significant.”
Under the current program offered by LSAWL, qualifying pet owners pay a portion of the costs, while the organization subsidizes the rest. This arrangement allows access to surgeries, vaccinations, and microchipping at a substantially reduced price. Clients contribute $125, while LSAWL covers an additional $80-$100 per animal.
Recent media exposure has resulted in approximately $2,000 in donations, enabling LSAWL to subsidize spay and neuter services for around 20 more animals. However, the demand for these services continues to surpass the available funding. At the current subsidy levels, approximately every $100 donated allows one dog or cat to receive transformative sterilization services, thereby preventing future litters and alleviating long-term pressure on shelters.
Transportation challenges and limited access to affordable veterinary care remain significant hurdles in Texas communities such as New Caney, Porter, Splendora, and Cleveland, where many families depend on assistance programs to care for their pets. With demand on the rise and transportation barriers restricting access to care, sustained community support is vital to maintain the program’s current capacity.
In partnership with the Montgomery County Spay Neuter Alliance, LSAWL works to coordinate expanded access to affordable sterilization services throughout the region.
In addition to spay and neuter services, LSAWL also aids the community through programs that assist residents who encounter stray animals, offer microchipping to reunite lost pets with their families, and run a senior pet food pantry that serves around 35-40 households each month.
Community members can contribute to the program by donating at https://lsawl.org/donationssupport.
Donations of any amount directly fund surgeries, prevent unwanted litters, and help reduce the burden on shelters and rescue organizations.
Volunteers are also needed to assist with outreach, events, and program operations. More information can be found at https://www.lsawl.org/contact.
The organization’s efforts have recently gained further visibility following a segment on Fox 26 News that emphasized the need for affordable spay and neuter services in the area. The segment is available for viewing at https://www.fox26houston.com/video/fmc-3jbun8mzcshgksi6.
