Community Support Needed for Spay and Neuter Program

Lone Star Animal Welfare League Seeks Donations for Spay and Neuter Services

The Woodlands, United States – March 4, 2026 / Lone Star Animal Welfare League /

Lone Star Animal Welfare League (LSAWL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving Montgomery County since 2004, is reaching out to the community for support of its low-cost spay and neuter initiative. This program is crucial in preventing unwanted litters, decreasing shelter intake, and enhancing the health of animals across the region before they enter the rescue system.

In its two decades of service, LSAWL has successfully sterilized around 12,000 dogs and cats. The organization now offers subsidized services through reputable veterinary partners, making vital care accessible to pet owners who may otherwise find it financially challenging.

Spaying and neutering are widely acknowledged as the most effective methods for curbing stray populations and preventing animals from being placed in overcrowded shelters. Unlike emergency rescues that focus on individual cases, preventive measures address suffering before it starts.

“Spaying and neutering stops litters of puppies from being born only to be abandoned on the streets or taken to overcrowded shelters,” stated Laura McConnell, the founder of Lone Star Animal Welfare League. “While it may not be as visible as an emergency rescue, its long-term impact is the most significant.”

Through LSAWL’s current program, qualifying pet owners are required to pay a portion of the costs, while the organization covers the rest, allowing access to surgeries, vaccinations, and microchipping at a substantially reduced price. Clients contribute $125, while LSAWL subsidizes an additional $80 to $100 per animal.

Recent media exposure resulted in approximately $2,000 in donations, enabling LSAWL to subsidize spay and neuter services for around 20 additional animals. Nevertheless, the demand continues to surpass the available funding. At the current subsidy rates, every $100 donated allows one dog or cat to receive transformative sterilization services, preventing future litters and alleviating long-term shelter pressure.

Transportation challenges and limited access to affordable veterinary care remain significant obstacles in Texas communities such as New Caney, Porter, Splendora, and Cleveland, where many families depend on assistance programs to care for their pets. With rising demand and transportation issues restricting access to care, ongoing community support is vital to maintain the program’s current capacity.

In partnership with the Montgomery County Spay Neuter Alliance, LSAWL works to enhance access to affordable sterilization services throughout the region.

In addition to spay and neuter services, LSAWL also provides support to the community through programs that assist residents with stray animals, offer microchipping to reunite lost pets with their families, and run a senior pet food pantry that serves approximately 35 to 40 households each month.

Community members can contribute to the program by making donations at https://lsawl.org/donationssupport.

Donations of any amount directly fund surgeries, prevent unwanted litters, and help reduce the burden on shelters and rescue organizations.

Volunteers are also needed to assist with outreach, events, and program operations. More information can be found at https://www.lsawl.org/contact.

The organization’s efforts recently garnered additional attention following a segment on Fox 26 News that highlighted the critical need for affordable spay and neuter services in the area. The segment can be viewed at https://www.fox26houston.com/video/fmc-3jbun8mzcshgksi6.
